Despite the best efforts of law enforcement in North Carolina throughout the year, illegal drug activity in Craven County has continued to plague communities. To try to stem the tide of illicit drugs in the area, law enforcement conducted several drug investigations earlier in the year with modest results. However, they have recently conducted more investigations and made numerous arrests over the summer months. Now, at least 36 people in the Tarheel State are facing serious drug charges.
Drug busts and arrests
Between May and July, 2022, officers with the Craven County Sheriff’s Office investigated and arrested at least 36 people on a variety of drug and other charges. The charges include drug trafficking and drug possession and possession of a stolen firearm. Authorities say they seized 24,000 doses of dangerous drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl, as well as 22 guns. The street value of the drugs was estimated by them to be more than $470,000.
Officials say the number of arrests that happened over the summer are a great improvement compared to the arrests made earlier in the year. Moreover, they have been working with faith-based organizations and rehabilitation agencies to help lower the number of repeat offenders. Officials state they are trying to focus more on rehabilitation and getting help for those who need it rather than incarceration.
Right to defense
Be that as it may, those charged with drug crimes in North Carolina have a right to fight the charges against them. For help, they will need to enlist the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney. A lawyer can analyze all aspects of the investigation, search and arrest of a client on drug or gun charges and work zealously to help the client pursue the most favorable outcome possible.
