Authorities in North Carolina and elsewhere are concerned with keeping the state’s streets safe for all. Part of that includes trying to stem the tide of illegal drug activity across the area. A recent drug bust operation in Columbus County led to multiple arrests for suspected drug activity.
Investigation, bust and arrests
The report did not specify how long the investigation had been going on, but the initiative was spearheaded by the Vice-Narcotics Unit of the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office. Through following a number of tips and conducting surveillance, as well as apparently acquiring narcotics from one or more of the accused, authorities executed a search warrant at a residence in Whiteville on April 12.
During their search, authorities reportedly seized a considerable amount of various narcotics, including cocaine, heroin, marijuana and prescription pills. They also say they seized around $1,700 in cash along with drug paraphernalia. In total, seven individuals were placed under arrests, ranging in age from 28 to 47. They all face a bevy of serious drug-related charges, and the bonds for each were listed at over $1 million.
Right to defense
Although the case against the accused individuals appears strong, each is presumed innocent in the eyes of the law until, and only if, convicted in court. As such, the accused will want to work closely with an experienced criminal defense attorney in North Carolina as soon as possible. An astute lawyer will analyze all aspects of the investigation and drug bust and work to help his or her client obtain the best possible outcome, considering the circumstances.
