Illegal drugs and guns continue to plague the streets of North Carolina. In an effort to combat the spate of illicit drugs and illegal firearms making their way into local communities, law enforcement from several agencies conducted investigations into possible suspects perpetrating the crimes, and federal authorities recently made 20 arrests in southeastern North Carolina, with more on the way, most likely.

Tasks forces take action

A representative with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) stated the agency is still not done with its investigation and more arrests are likely to occur. In a joint effort with the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the DEA and other agencies, authorities made 20 arrests during the week of March 14 across at least five different counties in the state.

Officials say that the Cape Fear area is a notorious location for many would-be drug and gun traffickers because of its proximity to major highways and other states. Their hope is that these arrests will stem the tide of illicit items making their way into major metropolitan areas, such as New York City, Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh and other locations.

Arrests, charges and defense

In these recent arrests, the accused ranged in age from 21 to 48, and the individuals arrested face a variety of charges, including conspiracy to distribute, possession and more.  Considering all that is at stake with regard to their freedom and future, the accused will want to work closely with criminal defense attorneys in North Carolina for assistance in mounting an effective defense against the charges. A lawyer will analyze all aspects of the investigation and arrest and will work to obtain the most favorable outcome possible for the client.
